This post will probably draw a lot of sighs, and for that I apologise. However, hubby has asked me why it is that Time team only have 3 days to do their stuff.
All answers on a postcard, or failing that – post here

Well, I suppose they have to set some sort of time limit, and they do have other jobs

Here’s the official statement:

The archaeologists and experts used in Time Team programmes all have jobs and most can only get away for three days at a time. In addition, budgetary constraints mean that technical crew – all those essential personnel behind the cameras (and each Time Team shoot involves 45-50 people) – can only be employed for as long as absolutely necessary. After all, Channel 4 has a lot of programmes to make besides Time Team. There is a third reason too, of course – having a time limit makes for better television! |

The Time Team specials are different of course. In a typical documentary the cameras are pointed at people who are employed by someone else. That’s the key to the budgeting. So for instance the TT production team could send a camera team over now and then to an excavation by MOLAS that goes on for months. They’ve done that. Let’s say they also send Phil over once or twice to add a bit of colour. That would still cost much, much less than the TT three-day digs that TT are paying for from top to bottom._________________

Thanks ever so much Jean – and there was me thinking it was something exceptionally exciting like restrictions that English Heritage or some other organisation had put in to place about the length of time a site could be excavated.
Thanks again
