I haven’t been yet either – MUST get round to it! Thanks for that – the Lycia research is only at a very early stage as yet (got to finish the Cyrrhus aqueduct stuff first), but it’s surprising how bits of information keep cropping up. I won’t be concentrating on the language, script and inscriptions, other people are working on that aspect, although I have seen some of the stelae on previous visits. What I propose to do is look at the settlements within the landscape, and whether the Lycians’ perceptions of themselves, and the extent of Lycia, can be seen in the archaeological remains as opposed to historical documents such as inscriptions.
And I was wrong about the Nereid monument – apparently it has a mixture of Greek and Persian influence. I’m learning…..
