From Radio Times 25th February – 3rd March 2006 SATURDAY 25th Channel 4 7.15pm Krakatoa The devastating tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 was not a one-off event. Over a century earlier, the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano off the southern tip of Sumatra produced not only a wave twice as high as those observed 14 months ago, but also a cloud of ash that affected climate around the world. This dramatised documentary account tells the story of the eruption, and of the scientists who took the first tentative steps towards understanding and predicting the geological forces that caused it. SUNDAY 26th Channel 4 5.55pm TIME TEAM *********************** Sixth in a series of thirteen programmes. A search for the lost Anglo-Saxon palace of Eastry proves problematical for the Team. While excavating two promising sites in Kent, the archaeologists soon unearth plenty of Saxon finds, but no definitive proof that the building stood in either location. It will take some time, and the meticulous application of numerous investigative techniques, for a story of power, politics and murder to come to light. MONDAY 27th BBC 2 8.00pm Tales from the Palaces. Eighth in a series of ten programmes. The Secret Lives of Palaces. There’s an attempt to date the oldest part of the Tower of London, while a vast salvage exercise prepares Kensington Palace for potential disaster. And confusion abounds when a bear arrives at Hampton Court. Channel 4 9.00pm The Real Dad’s Army. First in a new series of three programmes. It is impossible to think of the wartime Home Guard without picturing the antics of Captain Mainwaring and company. This factual series reveals how defending Britain became an altogether more serious business, with part one profiling the man whose mission was to create a vast guerrilla army. TUESDAY 28th BBC 2 10.00pm – Scotland only! Scots – the Language of Kings First in a new series of four programmes. Carl MacDougall tells the story of the Scots language from its roots in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Gaelic through to its heyday as the language of the Royal Court in mediaeval Scotland. He’ll show that Scots is a rich, muscular language with a history and literature to rival any in Europe. Five 7.15pm The British Face. First of two programmes. An examination of portraiture from Shakespeare’s time to the present day, as the National Portrait Gallery celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. Actress Fiona Shaw meets a host of sitters and artists, including photographers Eamonn McCabe and Rankin and sculptor Marc Quinn, to look at the diverse range of approaches to this enduring genre of art. Painters whose revolutionary work is discussed include Francis Bacon, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. WEDNESDAY 1st BBC 2 7.30pm A Passion for Churches. Seventh in a series of twelve programmes featuring stories of remarkable people and their battles to preserve British churches. St Mary’s, Norfolk. Viscount Raynham dreams of finishing the work of his ancestor by placing eight bells in the church tower. Time Team on Discovery.
