I think these points have a deeper impact on the programme than they like to admit. I thought this week’s Dutch dig was one of the best for a long time. This was because it was a departure from the normal format, meeting foreign archaeologists, and seeing how they work.

In my opinion TT has become stale in some areas. This stands out in programmes, where they make more of the interplay between the various characters, rather than concentrate on the dig in question.

I know we had the entertainment v education debate before, but I believe the pendulum has swung too far over into the entertainment section now. I don’t think this is (just) because we are all more informed on the subject, but due to the general dumbing down of TV.
