European Heritage Open Days 2005 will take place on 10th and 11th September 2005. HERITAGE WEEK 2005 EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS On the occasion of this joint Council of Europe – European Union initiative, some 20 million people are expected to visit the monuments and sites opened specially in September all over the continent. The aims of the European Heritage Days are to promote awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage, to promote Europe’s common cultural heritage and to foster mutual understanding. “Europe: a common heritage” is the permanent slogan of the European Heritage Days; the common European Heritage is the foundation of Europe, its historical and cultural roots. This concept embraces both the heritage that is recognized by all who live in Europe and the ideas around which the vision of Europe is constructed. The launch of this year’s European Heritage Days on 2nd and 3rd September will be held in the Czech Republic at two venues: the capital city Prague, often called the heart of Europe, and the historical town of Chrudim in eastern Bohemia. The event will be organized by the Association of Historical Settlements in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, in cooperation with the Capital City Prague, the Czech Ministry of Culture and the Council of Europe. REPUBLIC OF IRELAND HERITAGE WEEK 2005 4 – 11 SEPTEMBER European Heritage Days in the Republic of Ireland is celebrated as Heritage Week with a full week of special events and activities, and this year it will commence on Sunday 4th September and continue until Sunday 11 September. Over 500 events will take place throughout the week, offering something to appeal to all members of the public. The programme of events is co-ordinated by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government in partnership with the Heritage Council and many national and community organisations participate each year. The principal aim of Heritage Week is to foster awareness of the built, natural and cultural heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation, and to raise interest in our shared European Heritage. There are all sorts of interesting events taking place from guided tours and lectures, to music recitals, historical re-enactments, art exhibitions and craft demonstrations. Many sites will offer free admission or special concessions.
