A friend of mine is having problems connecting to the internet. He has Windows 98 and is on a dial-up service and whilst in the middle of downloading an auto update for MacAfee AV his dial-up cut-off. After trying to re-connect a couple of times without success he rebooted the computer and tried again but with no success. This was a while back now and despite numerous attempts he still can’t connect to the internet.

Any ideas folks?? I thought it may be a problem with the modem settings but with not knowing Windows 98 I couldn’t help over the phone. Talking to him this morning I suggested System Restore but there isn’t one apparently!!

The dial up connection will not work if you withhold your number. If your phone settings are set to automatically withhold the number then prefix the dial up number with 1470_________________Corinne Mills

Thanks folks, that’s a great help. Just called him about the 1470 and got a better explanation which I never got this morning. He is trying to connect up to register with Tiscali after his last ISP went bust (Time) but has found he can’t connect.

Therefore I think the Time number is still in his settings which is why he can’t connect to register. Would that make sense??

A. You can register for a Tiscali dial up service regardless of where you live in the UK, as long as there is a telephone line. For Tiscali subscription packages (e.g. Tiscali AnyTime) this must be a BT phone line.

Never mentioned one – just said it wasn’t connecting.

Trouble with talking to peeps over the phone, you never get all the details

one thing to try is just ‘create a new internet connection’ icon. put fresh settings in all the boxes; try one of the many Pay-As-You-Go phone numbers from various ISPs just for testing purposes._________________
