so it’ll be a middle surviving bit of inscription with letters chopped off at both ends.
epigraphers can now have decades of fun arguing about how to reconstruct the text!

The text appears to be IN English runes (NOT Elder Fuþark) and to read: …t æ a … …g d e …
No nearer to understanding what it says though :0(

Could be. Or possibly it might have been part of a hoard of scrap cut up and buried for later recovery by a metalworker. Similar to the “founders hoards” that occur in the Bronze Age.
I’ve never heard if this occuring in the post- Roman period ,although that might just be me being unfamiliar with the subject.

havent been about much as ive been in Scotland since a week ago yesterday and my Dad passed away on Tuesday night – will be home after the funeral early next week I had an email from the Museum yesterday Jean – it says:
