I was born and raised in south Lincolnshire in the days when the area was known as the County of Holland – so I like to confuse people by saying that I was born in Holland. Well, it makes me look interesting for a few seconds anyway ! I’m very inquisitive and love to know how things work, and probably took most of my toys apart as a child to see how they were made. I’m quite good at putting together self-assembly furniture as a result. Professionally, I’m a computer software ‘quality analyst’ and tester for a renowned British based company that has the proud boast of being able to say that about one in ten people in the UK are paid using our software. I’ve always been interested in how people lived before the Industrial Revolution. I love old buildings and was even more impressed by the Weald & Downland open-air museum’s buildings than the magnificent remains at nearby Fishbourne Palace. I consider myself more spiritual than religious, and am constantly intrigued how major religions seem to pinch the best bits from the ones they replace. I am fascinated with the “Celtic” period of Britain and also how Christianity has managed to purloin religious ideas from the Celts and the other early Northern European religions. I would however like to learn more about early English Christianity. My favourite place is probably Castle Acre Priory in Norfolk, a place I have visited many times over the past thirty-odd years. It always exudes an eerie calm.

Special Interest Areas

Pre-Christian religion, medieval architecture

Just started using TT site, but have enjoyed TT from day one. I live in sunny Brighton and belong to two local archaeologial societies.I am a building surveyor by trade and a divorced father of two little angels by the name of Melissa and Rachel.

I have a love of travel and other cultures and have been lucky to have circled the globe twice. I have one wish in live and that is that man would learn to live with nature rather than against it. I have participated in archaeological digs although I have not been able to devote much time to my interest. However with my sporting interests gradually being curtailed due to ageing muscles I hope to have more time. Would love to hear from others from the south-east with similar interests.

This is becoming a dating agency advert which it most definately isn’t.

I have an unique sense of humour so if some of my posting go flying by just smile.

Special Interest Areas

11, 12, 13th century everyday life. Architectural archeology.

I am a New Zealander , the first to be part of the Time Team Forum I believe, and live in Dunedin , New Zealand. I work in a busy copy-centre at the University of Otago Library which is a job that I enjoy. I lived in the UK with my husband Mark in 1999, for 10 months , so that we could do our “Big O.E” and see a bit of the world , as many Kiwis do, and get to know some of Mark’s many English relatives – ( his father was English) . We became fascinated by the wealth of history as we visited various places doing the “touristy” things.

Through some relatives in York, we discovered Time Team as the live dig was taking place there and became fans of the show. These same relatives have been sending tapes of the programme over to Mark’s Grandma here in New Zealand and I have watched many of the 1998 & 1999 programmes that way . They also sent us the Time Team book . We are delighted that the programme started showing here 2 weeks ago.

I don’t have a University degree , although I would like to start working my way towards a History degree, as British History is of particular interest to me as I have mentioned.

One highlight of our time in the UK was going out to Windsor on the day of the Royal Wedding and getting a front-row position to watch the procession go past – to see some of history taking place before my own eyes and not on TV!

I really miss the wildlife in the UK – the everyday things most Brits take for granted that we don’t have here – the squirrels in the park, molehills and foxes (even though one stole my sandal!)

Mark works at the University of Otago also , helping to train young Land Surveyors and the Surveying aspect of Time Team interests him the most. We would both love to return to the UK someday as we enjoyed living there so much.

I was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and grew up in Spofforth village, home of the Percy family for a few centuries, and where ruins of their fortified manor house still remain, kindling my interest in history/archaeology. I now live in nearby Knaresborough

with my husband, Dave, and our 2 cats, Bodie and Rocky.

I am currently studying part time for a BA (Hons) in Local and Regional History at Leeds University. The course is excellent as along with the history modules there are also a number of class-based and field-based archaeology courses on offer. I have been on 3 fieldwork modules and had a briliant time digging on Iron Age/Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon sites, and doing landscape survey/studies in the Yorkshire Dales. Apart from University field courses I have also been on training digs at Bamburgh Castle and in York over the last couple of years. I work 4 days a week in at The British Library in Yorkshire which is very useful for my studies but once I graduate I would like to find work in field

archaeology.

As for the TTForum, I have been reading and posting for a number of years now. I enjoy the diversity of topics covered as well as meeting

like-minded people both online and in person when time allows.

In our spare time Dave and I like to go out to play in one of our 4 Land Rovers. In December 2000 we founded the Yorkshire Off Road Club with a group of good friends and the club has since gone from strength to strength with a good calendar of events and over 200 members. When time allows I involve myself in amateur dramatic productions, on stage and behind the scenes with the Harrogate Dramatic Society. I have done very little acting so far but one day when I am not so busy I hope to

explore my acting abilities further!

My other passions are real ale, Irish stout, red wine, and heavy/hard
rock music, in no particular order !

I am old enough to remember rationing (just). Purely an armchair history enthusiast, I have no formal history education or archaeology experience, just reading and visiting sites etc. I have been more practically involved in the industrial archaelogy of canals and railways. Not a native of Scotland, Anglo-Welsh-Irish by descent in fact, but I have now lived by Trimontium for the past 20+ years.

Special Interest Areas

History of British Isles from pre-Roman to Napoleonic Times, but especially the dark ages and Scotland. Also industrial archaelogy, and the age of steam.

I have a B.Sc. (Hons) in Media Systems and an M.Sc. in Computer Based Information Systems. I am also a qualified FE lecturer, currently teaching GNVQ Communication Studies. My interest in Archaeology was piqued when I realised, at a very young age, my home town was an important Roman site (Arbeia Fort). Since then I have gravitated to the more ‘recent’ field of Industrial Archaeology.

Linked to this I like to walk down the lanes behind established shops and look at the structure; often this is original and bears no relation to the shop frontage.

Special Interest Areas

Industrial sites, maritime archaeolgy, local history (South Shields)

I was born in Folkestone, Kent and love all things creative! After getting involved with school plays, amateur theatre, I went on to study for B.A.(Hons) in combined studies (Drama, History, English and Interpersonal Psychology ) at Nene College, Northampton. Within 2 weeks of leaving, I married my fiance, Des, graduated, and moved to Colchester .

My love for theatre increased, and I became involved in 4 local theatre groups, where I acted, stage-managed and “propped” I’ve also been a check-out assistant, waitress, schools worker and self-trained florist !

From my teens, I’ve always loved archaeology, but have never actually got round to studying it in great depth, which I’ve always regretted, but I’ve now persuaded Des for us all to join the local archaeological society.

We have one daughter, Bethany, who’s 4,and has just started nursery; she enjoys TOTP and TT; we’ve given her a garden set for her birthday so she can help us dig in the garden! As a family we belong to a Baptist fellowship; Des preaches; I co-ordinate mid-week youth and drama/dance; we both teach in Sunday school, and will have a go at (almost!) anything! My main interest is writing and performing, and recently I had the task of providing the “creative” element for a carol concert, attended by 800 people ! I’m also in the throes of writing a script for an Easter performance, that is, if Beth lets me get on with it !

My knowledge of archaeology is fairly limited, but I’ve got heaps of enthusiasm, and willing to learn; TT and the Forum have given me so much to get my teeth into. Every holiday involves visits to castles and sites; Beth’s fave is Dover Castle, and I’m sure she’d love to come on a dig with her mummy !

I’m a strong believer in passing on what you’ve learnt, so that others can benefit and learn from your experiences and knowledge, whatever your field of interest and I’m so excited at the fact that we can play a part in making history, in providing, teaching and creating resources for all ages.

I also took a postgraduate diploma in acting, where I learnt how to fence ! I’m currently employed by an actor’s agency, and nearly got a job advertising Skoda! I adore red wine, “Friends”, “Cold feet” and “Ab Fab”, anything to do with chocolate Indian food and a decent cheese board!

I am keen amateur archaeologist, living in Thetford, Norfolk.  Five years ago, I found that I desperately needed a new distraction in life.

Then I saw an episode of Time Team on C4.  I remembered that as a kid, I had wanted to be an archaeologist.  I had grown up in Norwich during the 1960s/70s and witnessed the digs around the City centre.  So I then took up archaeology as a hobby.

I had always been fascinated by late prehistory, and had visited numerous monuments around Britain and Ireland.  I started searching for flint artefacts, soon developing an eye for flakes and started to build up a collection of scrapers and arrowheads.  But I knew that such private collection had little to do with archaeology.  So I studied field archaeology part-time with the University of East Anglia for two years. I launched the Thetford Forest SCS (surface-collection survey) with the permission of the Forestry Commission, and with the support of the archaeological services of Norfolk and Suffolk.

Since then, I have so far carried out 38  ‘forest-walk’ surveys.  I simply search the planting furrows of recently restocked forestry compartments for artefacts.  I take a sample of the finds, carefully recording every removal with an eight figure grid reference.  The finds are plotted against the size of the survey, and then compared with the results of the other forest-walks.  I am mapping out the densities and distributions of flint finds across the forest floor, and comparing that with landscape features – such as distance from rivers, soil-types etc.  Thetford Forest was planted in the Brecks, an area that is usually regarded as of marginal arable value.  I am also mapping out so called ‘manure scatter’ – abraded sherds of ceramics, to map out areas that have been cultivated and manured with domestic waste during the Roman and Medieval periods.  And finally, I am looking for ‘sites’.  My best so far include a 3 hectare Roman settlement, and a probable 12th century kiln site.  Oh yes, I have so far recorded over 2,000 individual finds onto the SMR.

I have launched a website to promote the project, and publish the results.  I am a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Archaeological Society, and the Suffolk Institute for Archaeology and Local History.
