“The ….. reached a crescendo.” Waaaahhh! NO! It should read: “The …. made a crescendo and reached a climax.” OK OK OK. I`m not being suggestive. But as a musician I can tell you that you MAKE a crescendo – since it is always used in the sense of gradually getting louder. It is very very often used in the wrong way even by quite eminent writers – really!! And it drives me nuts!! `Im Indoors hates “The …. centred around ….” instead of “centred on …” We have a saying in Welsh:
“Mae rhywbeth bach yn poeni pawb” (There is a little something that bothers everyone – i.e. everyone has a bete noir)
How true that is ….
