Grandfather Henry Holloway was already a seasoned NCO when WW1 started, having fought in Kashmir and in the Boer Wars too. He was injured at the Battle of the Somme and sent home to a desk job, which I’ll bet he was glad about after the experiences he must have had. He was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Gordon Highlanders, complete with kilt and sporran. By all accounts he was a hard b-stard but very good with the horses._________________
