Crest Button Earl of Abergavenny Neville
Diam 29mm domed
Description: This is a crest button, 29mm in diameter and domed about 1 cm thick. It is hollow with an inset base plate. It is constructed in copper with a silver coating. The front of the button depicts a crown with a bull’s
head above. The motto around the edge reads ‘NE VILE VELIS’ meaning broadly ‘Form no Vile Wish’ . Several families use this motto, but the presence of the crown on this button indicates that it belonged to a staff member of a titled family. I believe this button to belong to the Nevill family. They chose the motto with the ‘pun’ on the name in mind. Specifically, it is likely to relate to Sir William Nevill - 4th Earl of Abergavenny - born June 1792 who was a major land-owner in the south-east of England in the 19th
Century. In 1876 his son was made 1st Marquis of Abergavenny and the style of the family crest changed accordingly. The Nevill family traces their descent from Walter, Earl of Herefordshire and the brother-in law of Hamely - the Norman Conqueror of Over Gwent and the first Feudal Lord of
Abergavenny (1090).
